I started the reading activity by showing pictures of two famous cities to activate learners' schemata or background knowledge about a city and suffixes used to describe a person who lives in a country or city. Then, I presented two common reading strategies: Scanning and Skimming, and introduced a website "Rewordify" to help them simply vocabulary. Students read a news article about "Best of the cities battle heats up between Melbourne and Sydney" by employing the two strategies. The vocabulary and information they obtained from this reading would enable them to do debate at the end of the lesson.
